Background Crayons Add Color While Improving Fine Motor Skills

I like to provide my students with blue background crayons.  They are just unwrapped broken crayons that they may use to add a nice, blue background to most of their illustrations.

Not only do they help to create a more "finished" looking illustration, but they help to improve fine motor skills.  The students need to hold these little crayons tightly in their fingers as they use the side of the crayon to fill in the background on their paper.

Here are some examples where blue background crayons were used:

Background crayons add a lot of color very quickly.

Here, blue background was added behind the White House.

Blue background adds a lot to outdoor scenes.

Blue background helps illustrate the setting of a story.

Blue background makes everything more colorful.
