January is the perfect time to focus on foundational Language Arts skills AND to review the numbers 1-10 before moving on to those tricky teens. Help your students to develop true conceptual understanding and build a firm foundation for the numbers 1-10. That will make the teens easier to understand.

1. All About Numbers 1-10: You get all of this for each number 1-10! The different templates allow you to differentiate and focus on specific skills. Great for RTI too.

2. Seasonal Journal Pages with Rubrics: You get the basic "pencil" rubric plus four additional templates, one for each season. Your students will love returning to school to a new "winter" journal. You can copy & bind these into a daily journal or use them one-at-a-time as needed.

3. Sight Word Pocket-Lockets: This makes a FUN small group lesson and can also be used to create an independent center. Just copy on colored construction paper, add scissors, glue, and some yarn to help your students create a pocket watch or a locket to wear home.

4. Alphabet Picture Cards and a template for a cute alphabet book: You can do one a week or one a day. Each page reinforces initial consonant and short vowel sounds.

While the igloo is melting, you can log your observations and WRITE about it!

You can also COUNT the blocks and SUBTRACT them as they melt!

WRITE about your prediction, observations, and conclusion.

And integrate the ARTS by singing about the water cycle!

What A FUN Way To Learn Initial Sounds

We Are Making An Alphabet Book!:

Each week, we focus on a different letter.  My students get a special "dictionary page" where they may choose 3 different pictures of objects that begin with that sound, illustrate it, and label it.

How To Begin:

I teach ALL of the letters from the very first week using Heidi's Songs, Zoo Phonics, and Letterland, a UK publication that I picked up while traveling through Norther Ireland.

Then, we focus on an individual letter each week.  At first, I put out pictures of objects only that begin with the focus letter.  Students choose 3 pictures, illustrate them on their "dictionary page" and color them in.  Adding blue background with the sides of broken blue crayons really makes these pages pop.  

The set comes with 3 picture cards for each letter of the alphabet.
They fit perfectly on the dictionary pages.

My set of dictionary pages and picture cards comes with black and white AND color dictionary pages.  The colored set is great for samples.  You can attach colored images to that page as a sample for your students.  I add these picture cards to sets of cards I have made using old phonics books.

My students and I found these images and made more picture cards to add to our sets.

Each page comes in color and in black & white
and has 2 landscape style frames and one portrait.

Moving Ahead The Common Core Way:

This activity addressees Common Core standard RF.K.3  Phonics and Word Recognition.

After the first couple of weeks, I mix in picture cards that do not begin with the focus sound.  Then, students must say the name of the object and determine whether or not that word begins with the focus letter.  

Extending The Learning:

Set up a center filled with magazines and toy catalogs where students can cut out pictures and add them to a zip-lock bag labeled with an initial sound.  Glue the individual pictures to construction paper cards and label them with the object's name.  

Adding The Alphabet Chants:

Each week, my students get a poem that features each focus letter.  These poems, filled with alliteration, is the perfect place to hunt for the uppercase and lowercase focus letters.  The words are written in a dotted font, so students can easily trace over ONLY the focus letters with a fine tipped marking pen.  

These pocket pages create our alphabet book.

Then, they are glued to the pockets flap, the dictionary page is glued inside the pocket, and special craftivities and phonics headbands fit nicely in the pockets.

Phonic Puppets: "Sound" GREAT!!!

Phonics Puppets:

I love the purple mouse.

I set out new puppets based on the letters we have covered thoroughly so far - Ss, Mm, Rr, Tt, Bb, and Aa.  Students will match the written letters to the puppets' initial sounds.

We have a spider, mouse, rooster, tiger, bee, and an alligator.  They should make interesting story lines with those characters, right?

The Purple Mouse:

I created a book to go with this purple mouse puppet.  It's a mini book about how a little mouse turned purple.  There are 3 characters in this story.  Their names are "One", "Two",  and "Three". There is also a focus on reading the color words "red", "blue", and "purple" as well as the number words from one to five.  Elements of text allow students to discover characters, the setting, the problem, and the solution.  Link it to science and art by creating purple with paints, Play Dough, or Kinetic Sand. You can see the book by clicking HERE.

Puppet Stage Skills:

The puppet rack is usually on the carpet behind the stage.

Just in case you have to justify having a puppet stage and puppets in your classroom, here are the skills students will be practicing:

oral language

identifying characters

sequencing a story

re-telling a story

listening

identifying initial sounds

isolating sounds

matching the written letter to the initial sound

cooperation

networking

Keeping The FUN In The FUNdamentals & A FLASH SALE

Making Learning Fun:

On Wednesdays, we have a "letter study" session.  The children place a cube on each item that begin's with the letter we are studying.  This allows me to re-use our old (and expensive) Letter Books year after year.  

They also get to dot the focus letter with a bingo marker and copy the focus letter 3 times.

Then, they get to trace the laminated letter cards with a dry erase marker so I can check for correct starting points and correct letter formation.  I made tracing cards for number formation too.  You can find them by clicking right HERE.

Last, they get to use a pushpin and poke holes in the dotted letter.  This is great for their fine-motor development.
