Easy Prep Earth Day Ideas

You can do these this week!

Here are a few ideas to make Earth Day exciting for your students.

No-Mold Bean in a Bag:

Have you tried the Bean in a Bag project only to grow more mold than bean vines? Well, here is the SECRET TIP: USE STAPLES! That's it!

Directions:
1. With CLEAN hands, slip a folded paper towel into a sandwich size zipper bag.
2. Add a row of staples about 1/3 up from the bottom. (see photo)
3. Write each student's name at the top of the bag with a sharpie.
4. Soak your dry lima beans overnight.
5. Drain the beans and have each student either WASH THEIR HANDS WELL or use TONGS to drop 3-5 beans into the bag in front of the paper towel.
(This is also a great time to have students explore and examine an additional bean, removing the coat, discovering the sprout inside, and getting to feel the hard, smooth bean.
6. Spray the inside of the bag with clean water to wet the entire paper towel, but not enough to puddle water at the bottom. Seal the zipper.
7. Tape the bag to a FLOWERPOT TEMPLATE (write student's name on the top rim first) and tape them to the window where students can check on their beans.
Predict how the bean will grow. Will the roots grown down and the vine grow up? How will the staples help?
BONUS: Read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Tape an image of a castle to one end of a straw and tape the straw to the back of the bag allowing the castle to stand high above the bag. When the vine reaches the top of the bag, open it a bit to allow the vine to wind its way us the straw to the castle. You might have to spray additional water in the bag each day.

And while you are looking at my TpT Store, grad over 20 FREEBIES!

Harry Herman:

You can use egg shells, bathroom tissue rolls, flat-bottom ice cream cone or small paper or clear plastic cups for this one. (see photos)

Directions:
1. Write students' names of the back or bottom of the container.
2. Have students glue google eyes to their container and allow them to dry.
2. Have students fill their container with potting soil.
3. Have students add a few grass or radish seeds and cover with a tiny bit of soil.
4. Use a spray bottle to water in the seeds. (Be careful not to over water, especially the ice cream cones!)
5. Place containers in a sunny location.
Radish seeds will take only 3 days, grass seeds will take a bit longer.
Once the grass seeds have grown out, students can "style" the grass with small clips or rubber bands. Students can also plant their egg shell, TP roll, or paper cup directly in the ground or remove the plant with the soil around it from the plastic cup to plant outside.

It's a GR8 Day For Science! + Links, FREEBIES, & Discounts!

You asked for it...

Here are the highlights from my science presentation at the California Kindergarten Conference in Northern CA this month.

5 Senses Pre-science:

I introduced each of the 5 senses at the small-group table so each child got to manipulate the realia and learn how to take care of the materials before they became part of the science center.
Their favorite activity was getting to trace their name with white glue and sprinkle it with powdered Jell-O. When it dried, it became a tactile scratch-&-sniff reminder of how to spell their name. (Great to use this with sight words too!)

Matter: The Power of Air

We got to make our snowmen float on air!
for the directions.
We had so much fun making our
snowmen float on air!

We also had fun with these paper helicopters. CLICK HERE
for the template and directions.

We tested different variables: size, weight, even color!
Oh, and the bubble experiment was so much fun!

We explored the properties of water, weather experiments that demonstrate the water cycle, and we learned this song:
(To the tune of "Oh, My Darlin'")
Evaporation,
Condensation,
Precipitation on my mind.
It is just the water cycle
and it happens all the time!

We talked about seasons, plants, and animal life cycles.

The Stars At Night, Are Big & Bright - - - - Deep in the Heart of...

Texas!  Well, Austin to be exact!

And the Texas teachers were the stars!

I absolutely LOVED working with the teachers in Texas at SDE's Pre-K and Kindergarten conferences! What an enthusiastic bunch of dedicated educators!

I had the opportunity to share eight sessions with some awesome educators!

My favorite session was the hands-on Make & Take called "It's A Great Day For Science!" That is something that the great Mr. Hayes, science teacher extraordinaire, would say as he greeted his 8th grade science class each day back in the 1960s & 70s in SoCal. Each time I present this session, I dedicate it to him.

We had FUN creating bubbles inside of bubbles:

And re-creating the life cycle of a butterfly with pasta:
Made with pastina (eggs), rotini (caterpillar), mini shells (chrysalis), & bow-tie (butterfly).

And they got the link to my FREE Scientific Method Signs. You can grab this FREEBIE too by clicking on the image:
Click the image to grab this FREEBIE.

I set up the night before and filled the room with samples from my classroom. Teachers were able to take photos and handle the samples.

Best of all, they got to hear three stories from some of my favorite authors:

Blue On Blue, by Dianne White is filled with rich vocabulary and beautiful illustrations. We were able to interact with the story by tapping, clapping, and slapping out the sounds of the rain. You can find out more about Dianne and her lovely book on her web site Dianne White.

Harriet Can Carry It, by Kirk Jay Mueller is a delightful story about a Kangaroo and her little Joey who just want to spend a day at the beach. I shared how to read this story while filling up a beach bag much like we do when we read The Mitten, except this story takes place in the summer. You can find more info about Kirk and his beautiful book at his web site Kirk Jay Mueller.

You're Wonderful, by Debbie Clement comes with the song on a CD. This is the perfect song to use at your Pre-K or Kindergarten graduation or any time you want children to feel "wonderful" about themselves! Visit her blog: Rainbows Within Reach.

And I was able to give away a "Show & Tell" apron!
Click the image to see the website.

This sweet teacher was so excited to win that she did the Happy Dance!

You can see all of the amazing Show & Tell Aprons by CLICKING HERE.

We all had such a GREAT time at SDE's Pre-K Conference and their Kindergarten Conference!

And in the evenings, the presenters got to enjoy some delicious Austin food and some great company! Here we are with the ladies from ESGI. That is the website that saved me hours upon hours of time and caused my students to BEG TO BE TESTED! If you haven't checked out their amazing online testing website, you owe it to yourself (and your students) to give it a try with their 60-day FREE trial. Remember to enter the promotional code KFUN when you sign up for your FREE trial and they will be happy to apply a $40 discount to your first year.  CLICK HERE go grab your FREE trial and find out what all the buzz is about!

And when it was time to fly back to California, the full moon was shining over my Southwest plane.

"Good-bye, Austin!" I hope to return again next year!
