Are These The Top 4 Skills Your Class Will Master This January AND What About Their Teacher?

These 4 skill sets are on  SALE for the New Year...

Phonics, sight words, writing, & math:
My favorite 3 Language Arts sets, plus my huge Numbers 1-10 set, are all on sale right now and through this New Year weekend! What a great way to welcome in 2017 and be ready for your "Littles" when school resumes in Jan.

January is the perfect time to focus on foundational Language Arts skills AND to review the numbers 1-10 before moving on to those tricky teens. Help your students to develop true conceptual understanding and build a firm foundation for the numbers 1-10. That will make the teens easier to understand.

1. All About Numbers 1-10: You get all of this for each number 1-10! The different templates allow you to differentiate and focus on specific skills. Great for RTI too.

2. Seasonal Journal Pages with Rubrics: You get the basic "pencil" rubric plus four additional templates, one for each season. Your students will love returning to school to a new "winter" journal. You can copy & bind these into a daily journal or use them one-at-a-time as needed.

3. Sight Word Pocket-Lockets: This makes a FUN small group lesson and can also be used to create an independent center. Just copy on colored construction paper, add scissors, glue, and some yarn to help your students create a pocket watch or a locket to wear home.

4. Alphabet Picture Cards and a template for a cute alphabet book: You can do one a week or one a day. Each page reinforces initial consonant and short vowel sounds.

Have you thought of attending a conference this January?

I'll be presenting at the PK1 Conference in Santa Clara, CA on Jan. 14 & 15.
You can read about all of the speakers and sessions by
And if you're on the East coast, you can catch me at

I hope you enjoy the sale and have a wonderful New Year!
See you all in 2017!

You Won't Believe How Much FUN Math Can Be! Halloween Themed Math:

This is the perfect time for your students to shop at the Monster Mall!  We met Common Core State Standards in the most un-common way!
Here are some of our monsters and one of our menus.

I started by cutting squares of green construction paper to 7" X 7".

I created some monster pieces (like eyes, noses, scars, hair, necks with bolts, and mouths) and made a menu:
I gathered or made hair, eyes,
noses, mouths, necks, and scars.
I got my craft supplies from Oriental Trading Company. They have wiggle eyes, pom-poms for the noses, yarn for the mouths, and foam sheets for the head, neck, and hair.
Each item on this menu cost one cube.

Then, I called up 4 students at a time and I gave them each 5 cubes, counters, or plastic coins to use as money.
Each of the 4 children I met with used a different
colored set of five cubes so I could keep track of
how many cubes each child gave me.
Each item cost 1 counter, so they did not have enough cubes to buy every item, but they did have enough to buy 5 items.

You can also use any type of counters or coins.

This menu used 1 cent
instead of 1 cube for each item.

Some students bought hair, some did not.  The ones who bought hair got to decide if they wanted the hair to point down like bangs or up like spiked hair.

Some bought a scar to use on the side of their monster's face.  Some used the scar as a mouth.

If they bought a yarn mouth, they got to decide if they wanted the mouth to smile or frown.

Each monster looked different from the others, but they all cost 5 cubes.

We put them up in the school showcase.
Our monsters look great in the showcase
along with our stories.

We displayed our menu in the showcase too.
I love how each monster looks different.
You can add more parts or increase the prices of the items to make it work for your own class.

I have shopping receipt templates for 3 other stores:
Meow Mall:  Students shop for parts to decorate their black cats.
Snowman Shop:  Students shop for parts to decorate their snowmen.
Leprechaun Store:  Students shop for parts to decorate their leprechauns.
You can find these receipts and directions here.

And you can get 3 sets of templates to create:
A black cat at the Meow Mall
A snowman at the Snowman Shoppe
or
A leprechaun at the Leprechaun Store
Click & Grab!

to grab the bundle of all 3 which includes a variety of receipts.

The Common Core State Standards call for real world math.  Shopping is as real as it gets, even at the Monster Mall!  Here are the CCSS covered in this lesson:

  • CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
    • CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4a When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
    • CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4b Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
    • CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4c Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.

A New Back-to-School Craftivity & A Birthday Giveaway!

How would you like to help me celebrate my birthday with some new clipart?

I'm giving away a FREE CD of DJ Inkers' Kidillywinks!

You get 818 graphics in this amazing set! Win a set FREE by entering below.
It's the same set that I used to create my new... wait for it...

Click the image to get your copy.
You can enter via the Rafflecopter below, but first, let me tell you about this cute craft that builds mental math while your students are having FUN!

The Craftivity That's Filled With Math Skills:

All of the pieces for this "craftifity" come in black & white as well as in color.

Each student needs:
 one paper lunch bag
one copy of the backpack
one copy of the items to "buy"
one copy of the receipt
crayons, scissors, & glue

I also provide extra copies of the items to buy
just in case anyone wants to "buy"
more than one of any of the items.
I included black & white copies of EVERYTHING, so you don't have to use the color copies.

Students color (if they have the black & white copy), cut out, and glue a backpack to the front of the bag. Leave room at the top of the bag to fold the top down later by lining up the bottom of the backpack with the bottom of the front of the lunch bag.
Here are the color copies, but the set comes with every image in black and white too.

They also color (if they have the black & white copy) and cut out the items to buy.
If you provide more than one copy of the items to buy, students may buy more than one of each item.

In a small group setting, tell the students that they have only ten cents to purchase items. They will have to pick and choose to spend all of their money without overspending.  Note that ten cents is not enough to buy all of the items, so they will have to use their thinking skills to choose enough items to total ten cents without going over that amount.
Click the image.

As they choose their items, they may add mentally in their heads or by making lines on a paper. You can also give them each ten plastic (or real) pennies or ten Unifix cubes to help them keep track of how much they have spent and how much money they have left. Then, they can move their counters from one side of their desk to the other as they "spend" their money. They can also subtract as they change their minds and exchange items!
Click the image.

You can help each student fill in their receipt and place their items into their backpacks to take home.
Click the image.

My Preferred Method:

Another way to do this activity is to call two students up at a time. The 1st child "shops" while the 2nd child watches. The teacher assists with filling in the receipt. As soon as the 1st child is done, she/he gets the next child on the list and that child becomes the "watcher" while student #2 shops.

Additional Activities:

The pieces included in this set may be used to graph the items chosen by each student.

Students may also use the labeled cards to help them write a sentence. Students may copy the words:
 "I like _______."
or
"I have a ________"
and fill in the blank with one of the words written on the labeled cards.

You can also laminate the colored version of this set and use it as a classroom center where students choose their favorite item and write a simple sentence about it such as, "I like crayons."

Another great idea is create a "First Day of School" photo sign. Use the laminated picture cards to tape to a plane frame. Each child can be photographed holding the frame that has picture cards on it as well as a sign that says, "First Day of School."

Time For Some FREE Clipart:

STOP!!! Save Those Little Heart-Shaped Valentine's Day Boxes!

What can you do with those heart-shaped boxes?

Set up a pretend candy store right in your classroom!
Click the image to grab a FREE set of candy templates.

Get your 6th-grade buddies to help make cube and cylinder candies with my FREE templates. The FREE set comes complete with photos of the tops of real candies so all you have to do is cut and glue!

Click the image to grab this FREE candy template set.

Make some out of light brown construction paper and some out of dark brown construction paper so you have light and dark chocolate cubes and cylinders!  What a FUN way to get that academic vocabulary in use! Right?

Let your students help "build" the candy shop by creating a AB patterns out of black and white paper squares. Use these to line the shelves. If you are using a small desk as your store, just place a piece of construction paper covered with the black and white patterns on the desk.  Add some doilies with brown candy cups glued on them and place the paper candy pieces in the cups.
Click the image to grab your FREE candy template set.

And did you know that See's Candy stores will give you little brown candy cups? They will also give you little white bags with the See's Candy logo on them!

I added a picture of Mary Sees and a photo of the first See's Candy shop to provide a social studies link to times past.

So what do you do with the heart-shaped boxes?  My students decided that the cube candies were 1 cent each and the cylinder candies were 2 cents each. Students filled the heart-shaped boxes with paper candies and the "clerk" used a calculator, a toy cash register, or paper and pencil to add up the cost of the candies.

After the "shopper" buys candies, he/she becomes the clerk and the first job is to re-stock the shelves with the candies they just bought.

Visit my TpT store to find more "shopping" activities where students create simple projects and get to "buy" the embellishments. Directions and shopping receipts can be found BY CLICKING HERE.

Managing Your TK/K ~ Part III: Small Groups

Differentiating With Small Groups:

While my kids are working on their independent table work, I call up small homogeneous groups of 4-6 students for small group lessons. I keep the same theme (ELA, math, science, or social studies concept), but I differentiate how I present it and what I expect the children to do. Here are some examples:
My Small Group Table. This is a photo of the students' work mats.
I just attached lined dry-erase contact paper to 2 of the mats.
They also have a number line and a set of alphabet letters and animals that begin with each sound.

ELA:
TK:
1st, students place a cube on each picture that begins with /J/(this allows me to use these pages year after year).
2nd, they trace the uppercase J and the lowercase J on laminated cards with a dry-erase pen. (Pens are easier to maneuver and they can erase the card and it's ready for the next student.)
3rd, they move to the carpet where they poke a hole in every dot of the dotted letter cards. (They get to take these home and hang them on a window to let the light shine through and illuminate each letter. )

Click the image to see the dotted alphabet cards.
K:
1st, they place their cube on the /J/ pictures and brainstorm other words that begin with /J/ and try to write them on their dry-erase work mat.
2nd, they trace the uppercase J and the lowercase J on the laminated cards and evaluate their work by circling their best uppercase J and lowercase J.
3rd, they work together to create a group sentence using as many /J/ words as possible and we network as we all write that group sentence on our dry-erase work mat.
OR... you can have each child complete the sentence: I like ________. The blank must begin with the sound of /j/.

More Differentiated ELA Lessons:

Instant Writing:
Students use the graphics, which are printed on colored paper, to compose a complete sentence.
I also use a page of "extra words" such as "the, a, an, my, your, our, near, by, around, through, under, over, next to..." to help students complete their sentences.
Click the image above to see the entire Instant Writing set. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Writing-Instant-Sentences-Perfect-for-beginning-writing--1116456

Writing About Colors:
These pages make great class books. The first one will have a page for each child's name.
The second one will show something that is the color mentioned on that page.
This set makes 12 wonderful class books.
Click the image above to see the entire Color Writing Pack.
It includes templates to create 12 books.

Math:
TK:
1st,  Using my Number Pack, students complete the individual number page with help from the teacher.
2nd, then they create an object, using die-cut Pattern Blocks, to create an object that totals 3. (They may use all the same shape or 2 different shapes.) The goal is to match the pre-written number sentence which might be 2 + 1 = 3 or 3 + 0 = 3. The teacher is just introducing the pre-written equation as the students use the Pattern Blocks to create an object. I usually don't do this type of lesson until about Feb.
Click any of the images above to see the entire Number Pack.

Click any of the images above to see the entire Number Pack.

K: Using my Number Pack, students complete the individual number page independently.
2nd, they create an object using the die-cut Pattern Blocks as above, except that the equation lines are blank and they have to decide which numbers to write on the lines to match the object they built. The students are building their academic vocabulary by using words like "plus" and “equal".

More Differentiated Math Lessons:

Rekenreks:
These unique number racks have five white beads and five red beads which help your students to instantly see, or subitize, the numbers 6-10. They can easily make them using Fun Foam, pipe cleaners, and pony beads.

Shopping:

What better way to apply math skills than through shopping?
I usually have 2-4 students do this activity with me at one time. While I let one student shop, the others watch so they are ready to shop when it's their turn. I set out all of the products, I create a menu with prices, I provide the money, an we collect the items purchased in a Zip-lock bag that has the child's name on it and a receipt. Once everyone has shopped, we create our monsters (or cats, see further below). These make a great bulletin board displayed along with each individual receipt.

Click the image above to see my shopping receipt set.
 Addition:

Students use manipulative to compose addition sentences. This can also be reversed to use with subtraction.
Click the image above to get the 1-10 number pack.
 Measurment:

Students measured, using cubes, they weighted, they estimated, and they talked about math!
This was a fun activity to do around St. Patrick's Day.

More or Less:

Students loved using Fun Foam letters to create "more" or "less" in each group.
They also enjoyed using the <, =, & > signs made from tongue depressors, google eyes, and Fun Foam for the teeth.
Click on the image above to see my More or Less set.
